The Rocky Horror Picture Show is among other things a loving homage to the horror and sci-fi B-movies of the 30s to 60s. Those were usually screened as double features, where for the price of one ticket you got two movies back to back. Unlike the Rocky Horror song Science Fiction Double Feature, our double-bill of cinematic horrors will not feature the fondly remembered classics. Instead it will test the endurance of our audience with two of the era’s most entertainingly dreadful turds, which often feature on lists of the worst films ever made. Attack of the Crab Monsters by legendary schlock king Roger Corman is a typical example of his low cost, lame product, but fabulous advertising approach to filmmaking. The absurd tale of mutated giant crabs boasts silly dialogue scenes intercut with laughable Sesame Street-style SFX. An even more radical viewing experience promises The Beast of Yucca Flats, staring Ed Wood’s favourite Thor Johnson. Shot without sound, most of the final audio is comprised of a narrator’s trailer-like commentary, which tries to give the tired and lifeless proceedings, about a Soviet scientist turned into a murdering monster by radiation, a feel of bombastic spectacle.
