Long before Nolan’s Oppenheimer, American films gave free rein to atomic fears through sci-fi movies featuring giant monsters, mad scientists or visitors from outer space. Tarantula came from the same paranoid hatchery of the mid-50s, but with a slightly more believable premise and elaborate special effects. Herte, the scientist is actually a philanthropist trying to prevent a looming overpopulation disaster. However, his irradiated nutrient creates a huge problem rather than a solution. Specifically a thirty meter arachnid feasting on anything it can get its mandibles on.
