Part Dead Beetle, part Tetsuo: The Iron Man – the American independent horror comedy Dance Freak combines two seemingly contradictory positions: the self-pitying gloom of Czech slacker films of the 1990s and the electrifying ferocity of Japanese underground cyberpunk. An extremely bugfuck insane and very Lynchian affair, directed by Robby Racklef and Alan Resnick from the Baltimore art and performance collective Wham City, it is set in a small town where experiments-gone-awry led to the creation of a dancing serial killer. Get ready for the ultimate bad trip through an apocalyptic urban landscape captured in grainy black and white, yet brimming with nervy energy teetering on the edge of a panic attack. The creators themselves say that they made the film with a single goal in mind: BE FUCKING CRAZY.
